How AI Is Changing Website Designing & Development in 2026

Quick story. A bakery owner messaged us late one night, around 10, maybe a bit after. She had “an idea” for her website and wanted to see something before opening the shop next morning. A couple of years back we’d have said, sure, give us a week. This time she woke up to three homepage drafts.
Were they perfect? Not even close. One had a pink that made her laugh out loud. But she had something to point at and say “this, not that.” And that’s really the story of website designing & development right now. AI didn’t replace anyone in our team. It just moved the slow parts out of the way.
I’ll go through what we’ve actually noticed on client work this year. Some of it is great. Some of it, frankly, is overhyped.
The blank screen problem is mostly gone
If you’ve ever designed anything, you know the feeling. New file open, coffee going cold, zero ideas. Now our designers just type out what the client wants in normal words and get a bunch of starting layouts in seconds.
Most of them are meh, to be honest. Clean, decent, and kind of forgettable, like a hundred other sites you’ve scrolled past. Our designer Neha calls them “starter dough.” You still have to knead it. She’ll usually keep one small idea, maybe a layout or a colour, and bin everything else. The AI saves her the first morning. The rest of the week is still her.
Our developers basically chat with their code now
This is the bit that surprised me most. The dev team has an AI assistant open pretty much all day. Contact form with proper checks? Few minutes. Weird bug at 6 pm on a Friday? Paste the error, get a likely fix, test it, move on. Messy old code from a freelancer who vanished in 2021? Ask it to explain what’s going on, line by line.
Our lead dev told me the job feels less like grinding now. More time goes into stuff clients don’t see but definitely feel. Page speed. Security. Making sure the site doesn’t crash the day your Diwali sale goes live.
But here’s my worry. Since anyone can spin up a basic site in an afternoon, there are loads of websites out there that look fine on day one and become a mess by month six. Plugins never updated. No backups. Nobody picks up the phone. A proper website designed and development setup still needs real people who stick around after launch, and that hasn’t changed one bit.
Sites that change based on who’s visiting
Earlier, everyone saw the same homepage. Now a site can show a returning customer the shoes they were eyeing last week. Someone who searched “dentist near me” can land straight on the nearest clinic with today’s timings.
Nice when it’s subtle. Creepy when it isn’t. We generally tell clients: start small, and only use data you’d be okay explaining to a customer standing in front of you.
Chatbots that don’t make you want to throw your phone
We’ve all been there. You type a simple question and the bot replies “Sorry, I didn’t understand.” Three times. You give up.
The newer ones are honestly a different thing. They answer real questions, book appointments, tell you where your order is, and hand you to a human when they’re out of their depth. One of our clinic clients started getting bookings at 1 am. People can’t sleep, they finally sort out that back pain appointment, and the bot handles it.
Accessibility and testing don’t get pushed to “later” anymore
Every project we’ve ever done had a “fix later” list. Accessibility was always on it. Images without descriptions, light grey text nobody could read, menus that didn’t work without a mouse.
Now AI tools flag most of this while we’re still building. Same with testing on different phones and browsers. Broken buttons and wonky layouts get caught before launch rather than through an angry customer email. Someone on the team still double checks it all, obviously. The tool just does the boring first round.
SEO feels different because search feels different
Think about how you search these days. Half the time you read the AI answer at the top and never click anything. Or you just ask an assistant on your phone.
That has changed how we plan sites from the first meeting. Clear headings. Fast pages. Content that actually answers what the person typed, in plain words. Stuffing keywords was always a bad habit and now it barely does anything. If you’re spending money on website designing & development this year, ask your agency straight up how they’re handling AI search. If they look confused, that tells you something.
Where AI still falls flat
It doesn’t know your business. Simple as that. It has no clue why your regulars keep coming back, or what makes you different from the place two lanes over.
It doesn’t take responsibility either. Payment page goes down on a Sunday? The AI isn’t answering your call. And taste is still a human thing. AI can make something that looks “correct.” Spotting that a heading is slightly too heavy, or that a photo feels off for the brand, comes from years of getting it wrong and learning.
A few honest tips if you’re planning a website
Timelines should be shorter now. If a simple business site is being quoted at four months, ask why. Don’t just pick the cheapest offer, ask who looks after updates and security after launch, and who you’ll actually call when something breaks.
Ask how they use AI, too. Good agencies won’t be shy about it. And please, put some effort into your own content. Your real photos, your customer stories, the way you explain things to people. When so many sites look alike, that’s what makes yours feel like yours.
So where does that leave us?
AI has made website designing & development faster, no doubt. The bakery owner got her first look overnight. But the site she finally launched? That took a few long calls, one argument about fonts (she won), and a designer who got that her shop is cosy and a bit old school, not shiny and corporate.
That human part isn’t going anywhere. If you ask me, the smartest way to look at website designed and development in 2026 is simple. Let the tools do the heavy lifting, and let people do the deciding.
